Adams County Lincoln Day Dinner

*** Updated 4/29/2009 ***

This last Saturday I had the opportunity to attend my first political event, other than the Tea Party, and I had mixed feelings and expectations going into it. This event

Brian T Campbell and State Rep. David Balmer

Brian T Campbell and State Rep. David Balmer

was for the Adam’s County GOP, mainly a get together for the local and state politicians and their constituents, as well as being a fundraiser for the Republican efforts in their county and the state of Colorado.

At first I was probably one of the first non-volunteer to arrive to the event, my eagerness to cover the event got the better of me. Of course my name wasn’t on the list, and I somehow got wrangled into paying $50 for the meal, even though I was initially told I could get in free. ***note/update, I was refunded the money last night, did apologize for the confusion.*** It was the typical banquet, items for raffle were lined down the hallway, as well as several tables for the local politicians, where they were able to stump a little, in hopes of gaining the GOP’s support for the upcoming elections.

One of my main goals in going to the event was to follow up on the success of the Tea Parties, and to see how, if any of the momentum was being carried over. So I started talking with the volunteers to get their impressions of the event. Of the ten I spoke with, not one was at the tea party. All stating that they wanted to go, but all had to work. A common sentiment, I’m finding, from most hard working Americans in this area. (by the way, I feel if the Tea Party was on a weekend, instead of a weekday, the numbers would have been tripled) I had one guy tell me that he thought it was a stupid thing to do, and that no good can come of it.

He continued to say that, he chickened out in going to it, but wouldn’t have gone because, “the people that went, don’t understand what the original Tea Party was about. The first one was about Civil Disobedience, and this one was just about screaming at a building.” Personally that person is an idiot. He’s totally missing the point.

I continued to talk with the volunteers, I asked the question several times, “What’s wrong with the Republicans?” Several responses were, “Nothing at all, the media does whatever it can to give us a bad name.” “The GOP is a good organization, but the country is steeped in hero [Obama] worship.” “The countries mindset has shifted, and we’re really behind the 8-ball.” “We need to educate the people why the GOP, is really on their side.”

All very interesting comments, but I do agree most with the idea that the mindset of America is shifting, and the GOP may be a little behind the times. I asked one volunteer why there is no facebook or twitter or myspace for the Adam’s County, his answer was that it’s not needed. The political campaigns shouldn’t be ran on technology. This was a trend at this party. But I will point out that the sentiment of rejecting technology did in fact come from the older generation.

However, when talking with the younger GOPers, they acknowledged, that they are trying to catch up to technology. And even today, www.adamscountygop.com is not up to par. Supposedly, the new launch, was supposed to be launch that night, and if what’s up and running now is it… Well let’s just say, they’ve got a lot of work to do.

My outlook on this event did start to turn when I got to meet some of the local and state politicians, notably, Brian T Campbell, the organizer of the Denver Tea Party. I had a good conversation with Bob Beauprez, by the way I picked up his book, The Return to Values: A Conservative Looks At His Party. Tom Tancreado, was there,Lincoln Day Dinnerwhich the banter of Bob and Tom was quite amusing and made for a good night.

As the dinner got started, everyone took their seats, and I realized that I was not actually given one. So I stood for a while without one, but it worked out, I was able to get close up eaves dropping of many converstaions. With a majority resting on the utter frustration of the local, state and national GOP, and the very clear shift away from their values. One notable business man said, “I didn’t give thousands of dollars for these centrist, who posed as Conservatives, to go up to Capital hill and screw us out of our money. They’ve managed to raise taxes, I’m pissed off.”

He continued, “These RINOs [republicans in name only], had better wake up if they know what’s best for them. What, do they think the the Tea Parties were a fluke? These, A#$***** had better get their thumbs out their butts and listen to what we have to say.”

So I piped in at that moment and asked what would happen if they don’t listen. “They’ll face me I’ve given thousands of dollars to the GOP. They’ll start to face other people that are fed up with this nation going to hell in a hand basket. We’ve moved so far away from the morals and values that the majority of the US was founded on, that I’m not sure we can ever come back from that.” ***My feeling about this guy was that he’s full of himself. I was told by one GOP organizer, after I posted this article, that noone in Adam’s County give thousands to the ADCO GOP, on a regular basis, which confirms that guys just a blowhard trying to pump himself up at the event.***

Beauprez siging his book,

I did ask Bob Beauprez how we can turn the country around, “Well, the country should read my book, I’ve outlined many values that we need to turn back to. And Agenda For America, is what I call it. Fiscal Discipline, Security of our Borders, a commitment to the US Economic Dominance. Those kinds of things…. The Tea Parties are an excellent case for the politicians to start listening to the people, and the people are screaming for them to return to the values that made this country what it is today”

There were many other highlights to the evening. The three people that I took notice of were, Dan Caplis, the keynote speaker, Senator Shawn Mitchell and Senator Josh Penry. Caplis, who I will support for Senator, should he run made an amazing speech. I’ll give highlights of that is a later article.

Sen. Mitchell was a great Master of Ceremonies, funny witty and seems to be a strict conservative. Then Sen. Penry who I had a few moments with, a charming man, devoted to the conservative causes, and unapologetic for his stances. I asked him if he was able to come out and see the crowds on the 15th, he said that regrettably no, “I was in the budgetary cut meetings during that time. It was great though, we could hear the crowd, which was impressive since those are marble walls that the sound has to go through, but I was going over one line of contention. Right then, we heard the crowd get really loud, I turned to the other guys and said, ‘See, I think they want us to cut this line.”

He assured me that if I need anything, I can give him a call… “I mean that.” I put this here, cause I want it documented… (Actually I do need a job Sen. Penry, so if you can help…) but I digress.

Overall it was a great night. Once my initial frustations subsided and I spoke with reasonable people and politician, I enjoyed myself.  I was able to meet some great people, that love their city and love this country, and only want the best for her.

I’m going to give you a list ofDan Caplis

Dan Caplis

local people not just politicians that I was in contact and that you should take not of. There were other politicians that I’m going to list, one either I just didn’t meet them, but sadly there a a few that were jerks and wouldn’t even give me the time of day.

  • Probably the most ambitious of the group was Brian Thornton, who will running for Thornton City Council. Find his business and contact info at www.educationmediahouse.com
  • Greg Burt, help with Government Relations, he gave me the opportunity to come out the event, and I look forward to working with hi in the future. Find him on www.linkedin.com/ingregburt/
  • Brian T Campbell Sr., Organizer of the Tea Parties, but even more importantly, he’s running as a candidate for the US House CD-7. Find him at www.briantcampbellsr.com He’ll have a tough race, but I’ll support him in any way he needs. He’ll be trying to dethrone Perlmutter, and frankly that guy has to
    go.
  • Dan Caplis, if he runs
  • Dana West of Thornton Circle R, who is a leader of the Small Donor Committee, 303.725.0718
  • Ryan Frazier, he didn’t bother showing up, he sent a messenger boy…. that was disappointing. http://www.frazierforcolorado.com
  • Senator Shawn Mitchell, website
  • Senator Josh Penry, website
  • Bob Beauprez, website

Look forward to several other articles that will stem from this event.

Open Veins of Latin America

A Friend sent me a small write up on the book that was handed to President Obama by Hugo Chavez… Here is it… What are your thoughts on this topic?

President Obama’s chummy interaction with Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez has set off a storm of controversy. First there were smiles, then hand shaking, patting backs – and then the gift of a book. Just what’s in that book Chavez gave to Obama?

Galeano’s ‘Open Veins of Latin America’ has been somewhat of an underground classic; an epitome of alleged abuses by the West and the exploitation of Latin America. Now with its recent presidential present status it’s a book shoved into the top spot of Amazon’s best selling list.

Mr. Galeano documents scrupulously the statistics of abuse and murder – the facts, the figures, and interestingly the emotions, feelings, along with a heighten sense of injustice. He writes of how the genocide of Latin America’s indigenous peoples allowed for the giant industrial capital necessary to create the wealth of the west.

For the sake of argument if one were to grant all the allegations, the far more important question would be, what is the remedy? What does Hugo Chavez and his sympathizers suggest should be done now?

A BBC News report, “Rule by Decree Passed for Chavez” tells us what Hugo Chavez wants and has received. He asks for ‘revolutionary laws’ to enact sweeping political, economic, and social changes.” In the name of strengthening his “Bolivarian revolution,” and he’s asked to “nationalize key sectors of the economy and scrap limits on the terms a president can serve.” He also wants “major Venezuelan power and telecoms companies come under his control … (and) an end to foreign ownership of lucrative crude oil refineries.” In short, he’s claimed the oppression justifies a police state, a dictatorship, and socio-communism.

The argument is, democracy, freedom, and capitalism haven’t run perfectly therefore they should be trampled underfoot. Chavez might be well served to consider Winston Churchill’s remark that, “democracy is the worst form of government except all those others that have been tried from time to time.”

Ryan Frazier Speaks at A Colorado Tea Party

In a well spoken address at the Grand Junction Tea Party, early front runner of the Colorado Senatorial Candidacy, Ryan Frazier, delivers a powerful speech. Outlining, what brought many cheers from the protesters, a plan for American fiscal conservatism. Although admittedly I still don’t know much about Frazier’s stance on issues, his background or history, I do enjoy his flair. This, and other videos of Frazier, highlight a very intelligent speaker, and my initial search into his political career show signs of hope for the floundering GOP here in Colorado.

His appearance at the Grand Junction Tea Party may have served him well. And I do would back him in a cause for a Constitutional amendment to require a balanced budget from congress, although I like that to extend to the Executive Branch as well.

Here is an article from Face The State, I’ve become fond of this website, and recommend that you follow their articles.

Face the State: The Ryan Frazier Appeal

March 31, 2009
Face The State Staff Report

The results are in. Ryan Frazier is the Republican pick for U.S. Senate, at least according to a straw poll taken during Saturday’s Douglas County Lincoln Day dinner where 60 percent of the GOP faithful in attendance said they’d support Frazier’s candidacy over that of former Congressman Bob Beauprez and radio personality Dan Caplis. Frazier, Beauprez, and Caplis, along with Weld County District Attorney Ken Buck and businessman Cleve Tidewell, have all expressed interest in challenging Colorado’s junior Sen. Michael Bennet, a Democrat, in 2010. Trailing Frazier’s 60 percent in the informal poll, Caplis came in second with 20 percent, with Beauprez at 13 percent, Buck at 5 percent, and Tidwell at 2 percent.

Frazier, who spoke at the dinner, has been hailed as a key GOP up-and-comer to watch, increasingly known for a preacher-like cadence during his passionate first-hand testimonial calls for personal responsibility and freedom. At the Douglas County Central Committee meeting this year, women stood on their chairs shouting “amen!” as he spoke.

John Ransom, chairman of the Douglas County GOP, says people have gotten to know Frazier because he’s been actively attending their events whereas other potential candidates haven’t been as visible. At just 31 years old and black, Frazier represents a different face than the Colorado GOP is used to, especially for a high-profile statewide race.

“Normally, the GOP is a pretty hierarchical party, but this year, everyone is looking for a fresh face,” said Ransom. “People want someone who can be the future of the party. That’s why guys like Ryan Frazier and [Senate Minority Leader] Josh Penry look so appealing.”

But there are those who believe Frazier, an Aurora city councilman, will see his youth work against him. Beauprez casually explained Frazier’s appeal, “He’s a fresh face, it’s fairly obvious,” he said, adding there is a lot more to governing than that. Political insiders also question whether Frazier could easily jump from municipal leadership to the U.S. Senate in one fell swoop.

In 2008, Frazier was a lead spokesman for the Amendment 47 campaign, which sought to ban mandatory union membership as a condition of employment in Colorado workplaces. While the initiative failed, Frazier saw his name identification grow. After a liberal critic called him a “house negro,” Frazier was featured on the front page of The Denver Post and in an extensive Westword feature.

Frazier remains undeterred by critics both within his party and outside of it, crediting a grassroots and on-line movement that is increasingly supportive of his potential candidacy. “It’s not about me, as much as, it is about addressing what people care about,” he said.

Michael Sandoval, a Denver Republican, says Frazier represents growth and new leadership within the GOP. “Ryan appeals on multiple levels,” said Sandoval. “He is friendly and puts people at ease.”

In addition to traditional GOP gatherings, Frazier is also a regular at events drawing younger Republicans, including Liberty on the Rocks, a weekly bar gathering of young Republicans and libertarians. “He’s not the establishment candidate,” Sandoval added.

Much like President Barack Obama, Frazier is able to intertwine his own personal story while inspiring people to act. “My mother was my hero,” he said March 1 at a rally on the state Capitol steps. “She worked two jobs to provide for three boys. We didn’t have much, but we had each other. She instilled in me and my brothers a sense of ‘do your part,’ do what’s right, make a life for yourselves. I’ve carried that with me throughout my life.”

Summit of the America’s Focus On Ism Epidemic

April 18, 2009

In a speech during the fifth Summit of the America’s, Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper said, “Protectionism is the biggest threat to the global economy.” This is only one instance of a greater trend threatening the global community.

Terminating a phone call which interrupted this interview, Harper admitted, “I suffer from Communicationism. I have an increased tendency to hear what people have to say and then respond. I’m not ashamed to say that it’s something I need to work on.”

If only the rest of the world’s leaders had such transparency. “Ism’s have been proven to affect 8 out of 10 people”, according to Arizona State University’s Anthropology Chairman Ted Masters.”Throughout history the occurrence of Ism’s rise and fall, but particularly in the past several decades an increase has been conclusive, undeniable, and in all other ways, factual. That’s just the way it is.”

Perhaps even more alarming than the sheer numbers of those affected by the epidemic, is the identification of Ism’s whose presence have been largely unnoticed for generations. “Bigger-Faster-And-Betterism,” says Ron Blohm of the Connecticut Research Institute,” emerged in the late 1700’s with the advent of the train. And this made way for travelism. We can’t even pinpoint the exact date an individual could no longer be satisfied by simply reading books and looking at drawings of exotic lands.” There is an international team conducting research to establish whether or not Sub-Conscious-Travelism led to the invention of the train, or vice-versa. “It’s very troubling, but we are confident that the methods of the natural or physical sciences are universally valid, and therefore should apply to the social sciences and the humanities as well.” said Blohm.

The implications are disturbing and questions abound. How many Ism’s are out there still undiscovered? How do I know if I’ve contracted an Ism? How can I help a loved one affected by an Ism? David Schlessinger, President of Family’s Against Ism’s, offers some helpful advice.

“The behavior of a person affected by Ism’s may include increased actions or practices of doing something, advocacy of a certain kinds of actions or practices, and the condition of being a certain way. Advanced stages of Ism’s include efforts to change the behavior of others,” said Schlessinger.”The best thing you can do for your loved one is to let them know that, even though you may not agree with what they are doing or saying, you still care about them. You may even try sharing you own ideas and explaining how you arrived at those conclusions. It is important for Ism sufferers to know that they are not alone, and we should help them with every resource available.”

Denver Tax Day Tea Party Video and my thoughts on the movement

First I’d like to take a moment and thank some people that made a lot of this day possible. For our local organizer, Brian T. Campbel Sr., did an amazing job, and was able to lead an extremely successful event. And then all the other amazing people the volunteered to set this event, and upcoming events, into action. Also thanks to TaxDayTeaParty.com.  http://taxdayteaparty.com/teaparty/colorado/

My Thoughts Soon:

I’m Pissed Off. Is The Kettle On?

by Peter Kelly

I expected more. And I don’t know why.

Today was a day of passionate rhetoric. Speeches were inspiring in their call for a bipartisan voice to be heard in Washington beginning on a local level. Illegal immigration, overspending, and the stimulus plan were some of the issues protested on the west steps of Denver’s capitol building where several thousand people gathered.

Maybe I expected more because it was my first time attending any kind of political demonstration. But today reminded me that change takes time and it has to start at… the beginning. Today marked that beginning.

Jon Caldera of the Independence Institute, State Senate Minority Leader Josh Penry, and Weld County District Attorney Ken Buck got loud. The crowd chanted back in solidarity.

The message was clear. A self-employed couple said what many Americans have been feeling strongly, “I’m pissed.” Their 16 year-old son has been diagnosed with brain cancer and their younger son suffers from Muscular Dystrophy. They don’t expect any handouts. They want fair taxation. They want affordable health insurance. They don’t want to be penalized for being small business owners.

Issues apart from those highlighted during the rally also have many Americans worried. Although preferring not to conduct a videotaped interview, Stephanie voiced her own concerns. “He’s (Obama) misrepresenting the country by telling them we’re a non-Christian nation. I’m not a Christian, but this country was founded on those principles and to say otherwise is not true,” she said. “He would let America be a Muslim nation, anything they want us to be, but that’s not what we are. Its the principle that we have freedom of religion, which is very important. He is intentionally undermining the United States.” Which may be a prediliction for a conflict of interests in the very near future, including the United States’ relationship with Israel.

There were, however, displays of national pride that broke the tension that comes with such sense of purpose. The family band Bubbafly Barney were front and center performing patriotic songs. Their depression-era image sweetly reminded me of a more inward focused United States. They were encouraging, too. The first time our country faced such difficult times, we had no guarantee of brighter days yet to come.

Update: One of my pictures made on Tax Day Tea Party’s Website

With over 5,000 people showing up, according to the denverpost.com, and probably a more reliable count from the state police 7,000+ in attendance.  I was able to get to the Tea Party early enough to have front row standing. It was a blast and I loved every moment. I will commentate in a later post and share more photos. Until then here’s the first round. Enjoy.

T-Day Has Arrived, Let The Revolution Begin

I had the hardest time sleeping last night, I didn’t get into bed until 1:30 then when I did I tossed and turned all night, and was up at 6:15.

I haven’t been up that early in a couple years…. seriously. But I couldn’t help this funny feeling I had all night and frankly still do. So I was thinking, this was exactly the way I felt as a kid Christmas Eve….. I’m as giddy as a school boy, this is crazy.

So in my boyhood anxiety I reallized this day can possibly be out of the most import days in recent history, in the political world that is, in a really long time. So I’m coining this Day T-Day®™.

http://taxdayteaparty.com/teaparty/colorado/

I’ve got my digital camera and comcorder ready, and I’m headed downtown soon. I’m looking forward to taking part in this amazing uprising and grassroots movement. See you there. If you see this ugly mug let me know you saw this blog.

Am I going to be on the Rightwing Extremist Activity Watchlist?

There’s a story today in the Washinton Times that outlines a memo, titled “Right-wing Extremism: Current Economic and Political Climate Fueling

brew

Resurgence in Radicalization and Recruitment,” was sent to Law Enforcement agencies across the country. The report to the agencies outlines and warns of “right-wing extremist activity.” It suggests that groups such as Militias, White Supremacist, Aryan Nations, KKK, National Socialist Movement (how they consider the Neo-Nazi’s Right-wing I’m not sure) and others are potential threats to our nation. Many are angry that we have a black president, and others are clinging to their guns.

Now many reports come out like this. In fact while I was still a Police Officer, I read many reports similar to this that highlighted potential threats from all sorts of groups Left and Right. It’s really not out of the ordinary, but I think the timing of the report is suspect to me. Only a few days before the perceived “Right-wing” sets out to protest an over expanding government and an oppressive tax code, seems a little… political to me. I do worry that I will be pegged as an extremist by the Federal Government. This report seems to be focusing on issues that the right, or conservatives take issue with.

Washington Times: Federal agency warns of radicals on right, By  (Contact) and  (Contact) | Tuesday, April 14, 2009

A footnote attached to the report by the Homeland Security Office of Intelligence and Analysis defines “right-wing extremism in the United States” as including not just racist or hate groups, but also groups that reject federal authority in favor of state or local authority…

…The report stated “It may include groups and individuals that are dedicated to a single-issue, such as opposition to abortion or immigration” …

ff2…The White House has distanced itself from the analysis. When asked for comment on its contents, White House spokesman Nick Shapiro said, “The President is focused not on politics but rather taking the steps

necessary to protect all Americans from the threat of violence and terrorism regardless of its origins. He also believes those who serve represent the best of this country, and he will continue to ensure that our veterans receive the respect and benefits they have earned….”

….The report, which was first disclosed to the public by nationally syndicated radio host Roger Hedgecock, makes clear that the Homeland Security Department does not have “specific information that domestic right-wing terrorists are currently planning acts of violence.”It warns that fringe organizations are gaining recruits, but it provides no numbers…

So as I go Downtown Denver tomorrow to protest some of these exact issues outlined in the report am I going to on the watch list. Because I have dissension for most of the stuff that the Progressive Socialist movement is doing right now, am I considered to be a Right-wing Extremist?

Politicians get it right! Texas Government Backs Resolution Affirming Sovereignty Under The 10 Amendment

Source: The Drudge Report

Read the Texas resolution here: http://www.capitol.state.tx.us/tlodocs/81R/billtext/html/HC00050I.htm

“I believe that our federal government has become oppressive in its size, its intrusion into the lives of our citizens, and its interference with the affairs of our state,” Gov. Perry said. “That is why I am here today to express my unwavering support for efforts all across our country to reaffirm the states’ rights affirmed by the Tenth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution. I believe that returning to the letter and spirit of the U.S. Constitution and its essential 10th Amendment will free our state from undue regulations, and ultimately strengthen our Union.”

Perry continued: “Millions of Texans are tired of Washington, DC trying to come down here to tell us how to run Texas.”

A number of recent federal proposals are not within the scope of the federal government’s constitutionally designated powers and impede the states’ right to govern themselves. HCR 50 affirms that Texas claims sovereignty under the 10th Amendment over all powers not otherwise granted to the federal government.

It also designates that all compulsory federal legislation that requires states to comply under threat of civil or criminal penalties, or that requires states to pass legislation or lose federal funding, be prohibited or repealed.

Colorado HB 1299, An attack on the Republic and the Sanctity of States Rights

This to me is nothing more than a populist move to destroy Electoral College. It ignores the US Constitution, so it’s not even LEGAL.

HB 1299, introduced March 4th of 2009 in Colorado’s General Assembly, currently sitting in the house to be read over by the “Colorado Lawmakers,” and is sponsored by:

HOUSE SPONSORSHIP

Kerr A., Benefield, Carroll T., Casso, Court, Curry, Ferrandino, Frangas, Green,

Hullinghorst, Kefalas, McCann, Middleton, Miklosi, Pommer, Rice, Scanlan, Schafer S.,

Solano, Todd, Vigil

SENATE SPONSORSHIP

Romer, Bacon, Groff, Veiga

Link to HB 1299

This bill in short is seeking to eliminate the Electoral College. One of the bedrock principles that this nation was founded on, is UNDER ATTACK!!! Now this is nothing out of the ordinary, bills like this have been pushed and attempted in other states as well. The terrifying thing about this bill is that it very easily can happen. Colorado is so distracted by other things like the financial crisis, war… err OverSeas Contingency Operation blah blah blah…., American idol and other such things, this bill might actually pass. It’s insane.

This bill appeases a populist thought that the Electoral College is bad. The people that think this are either insanely ignorant and don’t know their history or they’re insane. The electoral college gives the States equality in the vote count in Presidential elections. If you are one of these, and really even if you’re not please read this articulated about the history and reasons for the Electoral College article:

THE ELECTORAL COLLEGE

by

William C. Kimberling, Deputy Director

FEC Office of Election Administration,  Revised in 1992

I love this insight from a fellow blogger over at Politix Cartoons:

Probably the most egregious insult is that the people of Colorado actually voted overwhelming against this type of legislation in 2004 in the form of Amendment 36.

People intent on destroying the Electoral College have not stopped with the state of Colorado. What I find interesting, however, is that you won’t find them wanting to break up the Electoral votes of solidly blue states, such as California or New York. Why isn’t there a big rush to implement these same types of measures in the big blue states?

The biggest argument that proponents of this disaster proclaim is that “every vote should count.” However, purporting this argument will send one on a logical quagmire. For if they truly believed in the legitimacy of everybody’s vote, then they will have to accept the votes of 65% of Coloradans who voted against changing the Electoral College! Their motivation cannot logically be about the will of the people.

Chavez in China Touts ‘New World Order’

BEIJING –Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez said his two-day visit to Beijing this week is part of the creation of a “new world order.”

The frequent U.S. critic told reporters that power in the world is shifting from America to countries such as Iran, Japan and China.

“We are creating a new world, a balanced world. A new world order, a multipolar world,” Mr. Chavez said on arriving in China the evening before a scheduled Wednesday meeting with China’s president and Communist Party leader Hu Jintao.

“The unipolar world has collapsed. The power of the U.S. empire has collapsed,” he said. “Everyday, the new poles of world power are becoming stronger. Beijing, Tokyo, Tehran .. It’s moving toward the East and toward the South.”

Americans! Don’t copy the British healthcare system! by Danial Hannan

Source: Telegraph.co.uk

It’s difficult not to warm to John Prescott. As part of a Labour Government that lived from headline to headline, he added a dash of authenticity. He may have been oafish, but he was reassuringly human.

Prescott is trying to fabricate a row out of my interview with Sean Hannity on Fox News, in which I warned Americans against adopting a socialist healthcare system along British lines. You can watch the old bruiser here. (If you’re an American who likes to imagine that the British are eloquent, please ignore that last hyperlink.)

I wonder whether anyone still falls for this sort of stuff. For a long time, Labour politicians had two slogans which they would trot out whenever healthcare came up: “Envy Of The World” and “Free At The Point Of Use”. These phrases were not intended to be arguments. Rather, they were ways of playing your trump, of closing down the debate.

Prezza uses both (or, rather, a mangled version of each). The NHS, he says, is Britain’s “greatest creation”. Really? Greater than parliamentary democracy? Greater than penicillin? Greater than the discovery of DNA, or the abolition of slavery, or the common law? John, the NHS produces some of the worst health outcomes in the industrialised world. Britain is the Western state where you’d least want to have cancer or a stroke or heart disease. Ours is now a country where thousands of people arekilled in hospitals for reasons unrelated to their original condition. If this is our “greatest creation”, Heaven help us.

As for the second slogan, which Prezza renders as “need and not ability to pay”, there is no health system in Europe or North America that leaves the indigent untended. What is at issue is not whether we force poor people to pay, but whether we prevent wealthier people from doing so. The British system treats everyone equally, it’s true: we queue equally, we wait weeks for operations equally, we are expected to be equally grateful for any attention we get.

Outside Westminster, the old incantations are losing their magic. Envy Of The World is no longer a charm to ward off criticism. People can see for themselves that Britain has become a place where foreigners fear to fall ill. Yes, all three parties are committed to the NHS: I am a humble backbencher, and speak only for myself. But I wonder whether, as on tax and borrowing, public opinion hasn’t overtaken the Westminster consensus.

Let me put it like this. Imagine that, in 1945, we had created a National Food Service. Suppose that, in the name of “fairness” and “need and not ability to pay”, sustenance had been rationed by the state. Conjecture that every citizen had been allocated one butcher, one baker, one café and so on. We all know where that would have led: to bureaucracy, to duplication, to surpluses in one field and scarcity in another, to racketeering, to hunger. No one, not even Prescott, is suggesting that we socialise food distribution – even though food is at least as basic human need as healthcare. As those Americans of whom you seem so contemptuous might put it, John, go figure.
